Kaia was a very busy person. She spent many days at work, striving to protect her muggle counterparts, and the days that she wasn't there she was helping her brother to take care of her children. Now that she was back from her trip to New Zealand she finally had some time to just think about the events that had transpired while she was there. Carter... she'd loved him for so long, but when she finally realized how narcissistic he was she'd tried her best to stop loving him... but she just couldn't. He was everything she'd always wanted. Except for how he treated everyone else in his life and her life. It was like when he was around nothing else mattered. K heard the door open, she'd been distracted and was in the middle of helping her nephew with some art project. Her brother was probably home. She shook her head out of the daze that she'd gone off into and quickly started to help her nephew again.
K was so happy to be living with her brother, she had missed him when he'd moved away, she understood why he had to but it didn't mean that she didn't miss him. Kaia smiled at her nephew as she started to get distracted again, she had wanted kids her whole life, but she was always having trouble finding the right person to have kids with... Well, except Carter, but she knew he would never really be a good father, well maybe, but she never could picture him as a dad. Her brother was a great dad though, which is why she wanted to make sure she was living at least near him when she finally had children. She knew that was a lot sooner then she would ever expect though, she wanted to wait a few more years, but it seemed as though fate thought the time was right.
Kaia glanced up when she heard footsteps getting closer, Nick was probably home from work she didn't work that day, although she loved her job she made sure to tell them very specifically that she would only work 4 days a week so that she could help Nick around the house, her employers had been very accomadating and it helped that her job didn't require her to be at work Monday to Friday normally, so she had some flexibility. "Nick, is that you? How was work?" K asked while she glanced out of the doorway of the room she was seated in. She was pretty sure tonight was not the night to tell Nick, one day she'd tell him, probably before she had the kid, no promises though...
Sometimes he felt like he was running around like a chicken with its head cut off. He had a time consuming career, which was made more time consuming with his drive to rack up more hours to distract himself from the pain he still felt from losing his wife. And then he had the full time job of taking care of his two children at home. Sure some of it was his fault. Maybe a lot of it. But staying busy was a coping mechanism. His wife had been killed in the Battle of Hogwarts, and even though he had been a healer there, he hadn't been able to save her. Sure it wasn't really his fault, but he still couldn't help feel guilty. So he pushed himself deeper and deeper into work.
But his children still deserved their father to be present in their lives. He always tried to be there at least when they woke up or when they went to bed. Sometimes with his work schedule that wasn't always possible, but that was his goal. He was lucky that his twin's job had been so accommodating. Really he was lucky she had decided to come help out in the first place. Being so far from her had been tough, but they had made it work. It was no different than when they had been separated at school for the first time. But he was glad, that instead of having to get off work and go pick up his kids from somewhere before heading home, he could just head home. Especially on days she was home from work. The kids sure appreciated it. And he always enjoyed getting home to everyone. Just like that evening when he came home. He opened the door, and just as he was putting his bag down and kicking off his shoes his daughter was running up to him. He hugged the 8 year old and said "Hey sweetie." She was the little girl who had made him see what unconditional love was. And she had him wrapped around her little finger.
He put the girl down and watched her run off before taking off his coat. Once that was done he headed off to where he was sure he'd find the other two residents of the house. Before he even made it to the kitchen he heard his sister's voice. "Yeah it's me." he said as he entered the kitchen, smiling at his twin and his son. "Work was long, but not too eventful." He went and grabbed a glass of water then walked over to the kitchen. He tussled his son's hair then sat down at one of the chairs, glad to be off his feet. "How was your day? I trust these knuckleheads behaved for you."
Kaia was glad that her she had her brother to lean on when she needed him. She was also glad to be there for him when he needed her. She tried her best not to think back to when her sister-in-law passed, it was hard to avoid it sometimes especially looking after her neice and nephew... She missed her so much sometimes, but she tried to not mention it around her brother, she didn't need to upset him in any way. She hated that she couldn't have been around more right after it had happened. She was the only person that K had lost during the war, mostly because she didn't live in the UK yet, but she did work with a lot of people that had been affected by it.
Kaia was so glad she could be around for her brother, but especially for her neice and nephew, they were sweet kids, sure they had there times when they bothered her, but in the end there were still her family. She would do anything for any of them, including she would have threatened to leave work if they hadn't been so accomadating, luckily for her they had been. She knew that her brother appreciated her being there, and now that she'd been living in the UK for a while she was actually enjoying it. She'd always been a person who had enjoyed the rain, so that part was not too much of an adjustment for her. She could remember when she first moved over the time change was tough, really tough. She wasn't good with jetlag... Not many people were, but K had a very difficult time adjusting. She was a real grump when she was tired.
K smiled at her brother as he walked into the room. "It was pretty good, not too hectic," K said softly with a smile. She was glad that her day hadn't been too busy, she probably would have thrown up on someone if it had been any busier. Or she would have fallen asleep... She could barely stay awake her whole work day let alone when she was not at work. She definetly struggled through the day when she knew in the back of her mind that she could just go have a nap whenever. "They were very well behaved," K said winking at her nephew and giving him a smile. She was glad that her neice and nephew were well enough behaved that she didn't have to stress over that as well. She had enough on her mind as it was. Although she was pretty good at keeping home and work seperate.
Nick and his twin balanced each other out it seemed. They had always been close, having shared a room for the first 11 years of their lives. But once they had gone to school they had been apart more than together. Until she moved out to help him. But not being able to just lean on her and get through life that way, had forced him to grow up. It had been good to have the separation. His wife had helped a lot as well, pulling him out of his shell. She had been the one to ask him on their first date, but by the end of it he had been the one proposing. But under it all he was just the hard worker with the big heart. He likely would have been a Hufflepuff at Hogwarts.
Being home was such a nice feeling. It always tended to be on the hectic side with everyone running around, but it was a good hectic. At St. Mungo's hectic often meant bad things. Here at the end of the day, there were always snuggles in bed with his two kids on a morning he was home or late night conversations with his sister. It was what kept him grounded. "Not too hectic is good." He didn't know which one tired him out more, being at home with his kids or at work running around after patients. At least when he was at work he had a large supporting network to help out. Here often if he was home all day with the kids he was alone, letting K go out and enjoy her own things. It why he really appreciated her help and ability to be home when needed with the kids.
"I'm glad they behaved." he said with a smile at his son. He had hoped he had raised them well. He hoped he would continue to raise them well. Them doing well, and not being too affected by not having their mother in their lives, was all he could ask for really. "You guys get up to anything fun?" Yes he missed the little things He missed being there for their daily routine. At least he tried his hardest to be there for the biggest things.
