NIKORA dunedin HENARE
** 34 -- HEALER -- NEW ZEALANDER -- WIDOWED **
"I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me"
The Childhood
Nikora “Nick” Henare was the 4th of 8 children, born moments before his sister in the middle of the summer, to a pair of half-bloods who were from New Zealand, but traveled around the world as diplomats for the New Zealand government. When they were born, their parents where in Italy. But before he was 4 they transferred first to South Africa then to the US. That’s when the oldest of his siblings was ready to go to school. At this time his parents decided they would send all their children back to the Australian school so they’d be close to home. That way they could stay with their grandparents in New Zealand on breaks. Before his turn to enter the school, his family had moved again to France then Egypt.
The First Loss
Other than the constant moving, and the constant noise (it always seemed there was a baby at home) his childhood wasn’t anything to write home about. Until he was 10 years old, and one of his younger siblings, Aria, got sick. He spent hours at the hospital with her. His parents kept working, escaping into work, but he, his twin and their other younger siblings spent all their time with Aria. He watched how the healers took care of not just her, but them as well. Sadly she passed away shortly before he was to go to school. Nick was devastated, but through the experience he learned what he wanted to be when he got older.
The Schooling
A few months after Aria’s passing, he and his twin headed to the Australian Wizarding School, along with their 3 older siblings. Their eldest sister was head girl, their brothers were settled with quidditch and their other activities, and the twins found themselves not only in different rooms for the first time in their life, but in different houses. There was some initial adjustment that had to be made, but they both eventually settled in. Nick was the patient, hard worker. She was the ambitious leader who had big plans. Nick pushed to work hard to achieve his dream, quietly helping his siblings with cuts and scrapes and other injuries. He volunteered in the hospital wing at the school, all while pushing his academics to be able to do it full time. His efforts paid off and he got the grades needed to qualify to be a healer.
The First Love
Since he started having feelings for others as a teenager, Nick knew he was attracted to both males and female. He didn’t see a problem on it, and really he wasn’t the guy to go out and get someone. Then there was Fiona. They met when they were in their 5th year. Well they were introduced, by his twin sister, who was best friends with Fiona. Fiona was the one who got the ball rolling in their relationship, and she brought out a confidence in him that hadn’t really been there before. In the end he proposed to her when they were 20 and she accepted. They were both madly in love, and were married at 21. He even picked up and moved away from New Zealand for her right after school. She had gotten a really good job offer in the UK, and he followed her there, knowing he could do his training at St. Mungos. So off they went. Just another location. Soon enough they added two beautiful children. His daughter, who had him wrapped around her little finger before she even cried, and his son who brought a rambunctious energy to the house. Things were going well.
The Second Loss
Fiona was a muggleborn, and as such landed in danger when the Dark Lord rose to power again. They debated leaving the country and heading back to New Zealand until it was safe, but in true Fiona fashion she didn’t want to run. Plus it could always end up where they were. So they stayed, and hid her parentage. It was relatively easy not having birth records in the UK, but it was by no means a walk in the park. But they made it through. But when the Battle of Hogwarts started, and there was a call for help, they both sprung into action. She fought, while he went around healing those who had been injured. They left their two kids at home with his eldest sister, who was visiting. They got separated early, and it wasn’t until he the break in fighting that he was able to think about finding her. That’s when he found the love of his life and mother of his children lying dead next to two death eaters. He was distraught. He was the healer, but he couldn’t help the one person closest to him. But there was no time for crying then. He still had work to do. He kept pushing, putting aside his grief to help those in need. It wasn’t until all the fighting was over and everyone was taken care of that he could finally face the reality. Now he was left with two young children to take care of alone.
The Aftermath
He decided to keep the kids in the place they knew, to keep life stable for them. His twin sister moved up to the UK to help him out, and has been a great help for the last 4 years. Nick has thrown himself into working at St. Mungos. He’s even taken several shifts working with the various Quidditch teams. Just something to keep his mind busy and not thinking of the person he lost. But he’s starting to move on. Who knows maybe he’ll find someone else.
