Luke's mother died giving birth to him, and his father (David Hartnell) never forgave him for the loss of his love. His father beat him quite regularly throughout his childhood, using spells to help subdue him when he was older. Luke grew up around quidditch, as his father owns Puddlemere United, and grew to love the game. He played for Ravenclaw in school, and excelled in classes. When he was done with school he went as far away as he could from home, going to play for Woollongong Warriors in Australia. Unbeknownst to him, his father had convinced the coach there to give him the tryout and the spot, a fact he learned when he returned home. His father wanted to makes sure his son could play before getting him, to make sure he didn't embarrass him.
After 5 years in Australia he learned he was being named as a Reserve Chaser to the English National team, which he was thrilled with. However he also learned he had been traded to his father's team. So he returned to the team, amongst all the rumors he only had his spot because of his father, even though he was a very good player. Of course now his father controls his whole life, and can ruin it with just one word. It's just another form of control, just like when he was a child and being beaten into submission.
