ILSE katrin LOEWE
** 25 -- PROFESSOR -- GERMAN -- SINGLE **
"I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me"
Ilse grew up in Germany, the only child of Henrick Loewe, a professor of Transfiguration at Durmstrang, and his muggle-born wife, Els. Always a shy and studious child, in contrast to the atmosphere of the Germanic school she enjoyed a warm home life, being particularly close to her mother who doted on Ilse and helped encourage out her daughter's natural creativity. It came, then, as a great upheaval when she set off to study at Hogwarts (no one wanted her to have to labour under the shadow of her father at Durmstrang), and although she thrived in classes and was the embodiment of Ravenclaw traits, she had a tendency to distance herself from others with her cynical Weltanschauung, her early homesickness compounded by early struggles with English, and her reluctance to let people in. In spite of her loving and encouraging upbringing, she struggled with a natural shyness. Whilst being shy she also has a rebellious, irreverent spirit, and often enjoyed creeping around and getting up to mischief in school (although her clumsiness meant her escapades did not always end quite as well as hoped).
During the Second Wizarding War her father was forced out of his position in Durmstrang, and Ilse returned to the continent to be with her family after completing her NEWTs, in which she achieved exemplary grades (particularly in her love, Transfiguration). They went into hiding for a short time during which she was able to knuckle down and master the animagus art, realising hers as a dark tabby cat. She also had a lot of time to ponder on the future and decided to follow Transfiguration as a career path. Her mother died unexpectedly around the time of the end of the war, and Ilse fled her hometown, heading first for a somewhat wild period in Berlin, and around a year ago returned to Britain, Hogwarts, and the Highlands. She still struggles with the loss of her closest relative but tries not to let it interfere with the rest of her life. Her family came out of hiding after the war and her father took an early retirement. He now enjoys gardening, cooking, and enjoying Germany's beautiful landscapes, and although the two were not particularly close they are finding ways to forge new bonds in the absence of their absent best friend.
Ilse was fortunate enough to be able to take up Professor McGonegall's mantel as Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts, and relishes the opportunity to do something rewarding whilst engaging in the subject she always enjoyed the most. In the years since school she has come out of her shell somewhat, although still has a sarcastic and cynical outlook on life and struggles with herself much of the time. In spite of this she enjoys teaching and presenting, being able to throw on the guise of an extrovert when she can better manipulate the boundaries between herself and others and gains real satisfaction from seeing the progress students make.
She opens up best in small groups of people, doing better one-on-one than with large crowds when socialising, though she enjoys big parties (they're terribly intimate) where she can people-watch and let her imagination run riot whilst sitting on the periphery. She has a tendency to lean on alcohol at times, particularly when she is feeling negative about herself, and can use it to avoid thinking about or acting upon problems facing her, but generally just enjoys a beer (something she admits, muggles still do far better than their wizarding counterparts- she finds butterbeer an atrocious afront to what should be considered a delight).
A tabby cat is her perfect alter-ego. Shy, finding it easy to flit into the background, but with enough lion in it to lash out, and like all cats, in a deep denial of the necessity of social interaction. In times of inner crisis or doubt, she will lash out as a defence mechanism, although this is a trait she dislikes massively and is trying to ameliorate.
As a young teacher at Hogwarts she is beginning to open up and discover the brighter side of a young. Perhaps she didn't shine during her time at school, but some people just blossom a little later, right? All work and no play makes anyone a dull girl, and she's spent enough time with books.
